The ability to do simple modding to Bad Company 2 has been a badly kept secret burbling on the back burner for some time. At the time I’m writing this article, there are currently 206 players online, playing a modded version of BC2 on 48 different servers. That’s a small, but persistently growing, community.
However modding BC2 has taken a step forward recently with the release of a o.1 map editor for the game. Now I have to be honest and say I’ve not tried the editor, however as it’s a 0.1 version it’s safe to say it’s not going to be feature-complete, nor is it likely to be stable. It also requires several additional scripts and downloads to work so it’s not for the faint-hearted. But the important thing is it’s there, available now, and can be used to edit maps in a limited way.
Needless to say the ability to edit a map in BC2 opens up some intrigueing possibilities – not least of which is the fact BC2 is built on Frostbite 1.5, whereas Battlefield 3 is built on Frostbite 2. Just how much of a difference between the two engines is there, and can a map editor be created for BF3? Well, they’ve already started work on a BF3 emulator, although it’s not even at the alpha stage yet, so there’s a way to go before anything concrete is released.
Another thing being worked on is a LAN mode for BC2. LAN parties anyone?
If you’re interested in learning more about this, or getting involved in anyway, below are some resources and sources. Again, this is not download’n'play stuff. You’ll need to install a number of scripts and do some reading up first before you realise any results:

Way to late. I’m afraid that the modding community will never achieve a large crowd popping up like it was with BF 2 & 2142.
However it might be interesting to see bigger and better maps created by the community, meaning real Battlefield maps as in BF 2 and 2142, not the silly maps as in BF 3. So over time I might even look into it.
