Aiieee…the obligatory “about me” page. Does anyone read these?
Well, I’ve been gaming for 30 years, and back in 2013 was able to make a fascination a job when I joined the Interstellar Marines team first as a community manager, then later as a producer. I’ve been active on Twitter and YouTube for a long time, and of course run this blog when I have the free time.
The two things which fascinate me about gaming at the moment are what happens “behind the scenes” in development studios, and the rise and rise of esports as an industry.
Development of early access games, and the large number which are likely to fail, will become a hot topic over the next few years. The company I worked for ran out of funding, releasing the team, so I have first-hand experience of what can happen.
esports has grown substantially over the last few years, and is expected to carry on that growth in 2016. The production levels of events is reaching incredible levels, the pool of teams and casting talent is growing ever deeper, and slowly (ever so slowly) orgs are maturing, although many still have bad reputations. It’s an industry with everything: skill, drama, growth and lots of money – and it’s centred around games!
